Come on Sunday mornings at 8:15 a.m. for a cup of coffee. The class begins at 8:30 a.m. and all are welcome to join in for the discussion.
Why not dig into Gilead and The Asphalt Jesus on Sundays?
Ever feel the urge to put your story on paper before it’s too late? Someone who did was John Ames (in the novel Gilead), who has a youngish wife and 7 year old son both of whom he adores. Ames (1880-1957) is the last 3 Ameses who have served the Congregational Church of Gilead, Iowa. Telling the story proves to be no small thing as we learn how the Free Soil/Slavery conflict has pitted the abolitionist grandfather and his peace-mongering son, father to John.
Marilynne Robinson, the author, received a Pulitzer Prize, for this novel. She is currently on the faculty of the University of Iowa Writers Worship and (not incidentally), a deacon in the Iowa City, UCC.
Interested? Copies of Gilead are still available.
